Double Page Spread Analysis (1)

This double page spread from Mixmag is a bit unconventional because it doesn't include a photo that overlaps onto the next page and unlike many double page spreads, it contains a lot of photos but normal double page spreads contain one or two. This is unconventional again because it has the subtitles but within the writing, it has nothing that splits the text up as it looks like a essay and this may turn people away from reading it because they don't want to read so much writing without breaks. They have broken it up a bit with the subtitles but I will use more things like quotes because I would turn my nose up at this essay because I think it has too much writing on.

I don't think i will use many conventions that is included in this double page spread because it is quite unconventional and doesn't really catch my eye. I will probably only use a couple of photos and break up the writing a lot more.

Contents Analysis (1)

This contents page from Mixmag shows what you would expect from a normal contents like a title of the page in the top right in the same font as the rest as the writing but in a different colour and bigger. The images takes up at least 60% of the page so it attracts the eye of the reader with the main image taken up 50% of the page. The page numbers are in two different fonts for the two different areas they are in like they are in a white and in lines that make it seem like they are important because they go with the pictures on the page. The other page numbers are in the same kind of font that goes with the less advertised articles. The captions of the pictures are just pointing out what they are and not including any other information but the caption to the articles lets you know a bit more about the subject matter as it is includes some background information. The free item at the bottom contains more information because it won't have an article so it includes everything you need on the bottom.

As i'm using Mixmag as my template, I will include nearly everything in this contents but change it around like move the contents into a bigger area or across the top. I will also include a bigger picture as I prefer a image dominated contents to a block type contents. I will also include the captions to articles but I will leave the article on my more of a cliffhanger so people want to read them more. The free item is a good idea and moght have to include one so it gets the consumers to read it and enjoy it.

Front Cover Analysis(1)

This is the Mixmag cover with fan favorite Steve Aoki on the front and it contains all the generic conventions you think a magazine would have.It has a original title that is used on every single magazine. Doesn’t vary very much if not at all. The sans serif font is to show the curves of the cd’s or records the dj’s play. The main article is advertised by giving small pieces of information and then a main photo which covers most of the page to show the importance of this article. The date, price and other information necessary to show people about the how much it costs etc. The image overlapping the title is something you usually see because it means the image can take up more of the page and it gets more of the attention from the readers. The borders for the articles that are seen on the front cover are important more for the readers because it means that nothing has to change colour because of the background and it also stands out letting the reader know that there is more to read then just the main article so it means that the magazine is packed with the best articles in the dance magazine genre.

I will more than likely use a lot of the main conventions that are shown here because i want to use Mixmag as my main template as I think it is the best dance magazine around so I would like to use the conventions of the main article taking up a lot of the page as well as having an image dominated front cover because I like this kind of lay out, I find it more appealing then having a block type magazine. I should be able to include this to make my magazine look more professional and hopefully that will get me more recognition and make it the best it can be from feedback from friends and teachers.

I scanned my mind map that i did the other day for the research i need to do for the making of my dance magazine!

Evaluation

                                                                              Finished Prelim!

I have finished my prelim task and i think it is to a decent standard. I included everything i wanted too but I changed the layout a bit to make sure my background was covered up.

My magazine includes a medium close up of a student and has the Whitley Bay sign in the background. I also included little snip its of other articles to get people to look other parts of the magazine. I have included another little photo to show what people do in the sixth form area and to accompany the article about new sixth formers.

My contents page is exactly the same as I described it in my previous post because I didn't think it needed changing so it still contains the big picture and the little introductions off all the articles with the cliffhangers so there is still something for the readers to find out.

In summary, I have stuck to my guidelines and haven't really added anything extravagant because I didn't spend as much time as I would have like on this but that is my fault so oh well but i'm just happy to have finished in time. I have learnt from this experience and i will put it a lot more effort into my research and my magazine.

I have used all the main conventions of a school magazine should have like a medium shot for the image and a big writing for the name of the magazine.

I have learnt from this task is that In design is good to use for my final project because when you learn the basics, you can do any structure you want.

Prelim Task

For my prelim task, I'm planning on include a picture of the schools name and a student and include the badge in as well so it the school is shown constantly on the front cover. I will also include sneak previews of other articles so they can tell whats going be included if i needed to complete the whole magazine.

The contents will include a big picture and then be mostly text so i can get my information across about what will be in the magazine but leave on a cliffhanger so it makes them still want to read the article.
